I'm planning to be in Laos the month of Feb. 2006 and plan to travel there for 3-4 weeks. It's been a challenge trying to map out a good itinerary that minimizes too much travel while satisfing the adventure and cultural experiences. I'm trying to avoid seeing the country on a bus, train, or plane. Althought, I think it would be difficult to avoid given that places I would really like to see are located in completely opposite corners of other.
Right now the only thing I have a definite is Luang Prabang.
On my list of high probability:
- Luang Namtha for trekking & village experience - does anyone have a good suggestion for a local tour guide for this sight?
- Champassak and the 4,000 Islands
Any suggestions for places to go and things to not miss would be much appreciated!
I have e-mailed details on luang namtha - what to see, etc...i have also named the guide u will not regret( for you treks into the nam ha national biodiversity conservation area)...
Definately hit luang prabaung and definately do the waterfall...but do not miss the water swimming hole halfway up the mountain w/a beautiful panoramic of the surrounding mountains,as this alone, makes laung prabaung worth it.
go down to Vang vieng and go tubing while drinking a beer lao, and even buy a joint on the river,( if that is your thing) do the cliff jump and go explore some caves. (all on the river)
Vang vieng has a cool vibe and beautiful village to visit.
I also visited 4,000 islands in Si Phan don in southern laos, very nice and beautiful but a bit boring with not much to do!
Thanks Dana and Felipe for all your suggestions! This makes my trip planning a little bit easier. It's my first solo trip so am being a bit cautious.
Btw, does anyone know if Laos celebrate Lunar New Year? If so, does the region shut down for a week holiday after the New Year (Jan. 29, 2006)like Singapore, HK, and a lot of other Asian countries? Thanks much!
yes, lunar new year is public holiday in laos (feb 1) but usually chinese and vietnamese run business are closed ..esp in vientiane...govt dept closed completely for one day.
