Wow it is really complicated to find places to stay in Moscow... St Petersbourg has been opened more to tourism so you might have luck finding a place to stay there, but really look that up with detail since Russia has just begun to open to tourism... I was there about 2 years ago and in Moscow they were just beginning to construct major hotels, globalization is slowly kicking in. St. Petersbourg is absolutely beautiful, out of all Europe I must say that it has been one of the most beautiful cities I have visited, with the more beautiful palace. There is a palace called "Peterhof" that is located facing the gulf of Finland. If you get a chance, that is a must see. Also St. Petersbourg is the home of the largest museum in Europe a must see also. In Moscow there are alot of sightseeing to see around the Red Plaza (lenin's tomb is there) and also there is alot of communist buildings around the cities. These cities were very rich back in their days, you will see that in their architecture. From Moscow to St. Petersbourg, you could take a night train, the trip is about 6 hours long. Hope I was able to help some how.... I have no information on hotels because I stayed with families over there, maybe you should look into that too. I am sure there are families who are willing to take in guests for some money, and that way you get a feel to Russian culture more in depth.
