Hello everyone!

I'm planning to go to the UK in February for a working/backpacking holiday and everyone is saying that London is so expensive to live in- so please explain to me how backpackers do it then?? Do they all work in London or what other part of the UK does everyone in my situation work? Also how much money will I need to get by each week?
Also- is it better to stay is hostels or find share accommodation or try to find bar work that also provides for accommodation?

Any help would be very appreciated! :-)

London is not cheap, but it "appears" quite expensive for a number of reasons:

1. Most backpackers don't have a lot of money to start with.

2. The money that they do have is usually of a "weaker" currency, and so there's the exchange rate factor.

3. A working/backpacking holiday generally means short stints of low paid work in between trips.

Go anywhere with little money, and do a bit of short term work and any place you are in will appear expensive.

Many backpackers get jobs in pubs that pay little in the way of wages, but include a room as part of the deal. Others use London as a place to earn some money rather than a place to spend their money. Share houses are another popular way of minimising your expenses. Also, a lot of good things to see and do in London are free.

Hey Heff,

Thanx for your advice but $595 sounds sooooo expensive!!! I'm still confused...... I think I will just go door to door for work when I get there! :-)

Yeah this is probably the best option for you, bring a few cvs and you'll find that plenty shops, bars etc will advertise that they're looking for staff. Shouldn't take more than a few days, max a week to find a job. The money you'll earn is a different story though... but as James said there are plenty of things for free in London as well :)

you need a working permit for 'legal' jobs. if you can, you could find illegal jobs, jobs which does not report VAT or tax. usually employers who dont like to report tax are employers from overseas, like China and India. these jobs are not so good, because the employers are usually abusive and really squeeze every drop of sweat from your body. cheers...

This isn't gonna be a problem for Europe2006 since he's Australian, I'm not 100% sure of this but think Australians are entitled to work and stay in UK for two years, the passport will be enough to show for the employer.
Do check before hand Europe2006, but you shouldn't have any problem with this whatsoever.
