i am planning a trip to basically go from europe to singapore overland...
now i've got big problem - getting to thailand from vietnam
is there a way to get from vietnam to thailand over water or something?
or has anyone done something like that through laos?
what's your opinion of laos in terms of safety?
There is no problem getting from Vietnam to Thailand. I have gone HCMC to Phnom Penh via bus several times. Cambodia now issues 'visa on arrival' at the Moc Bai border crossing. One day your are in HCMC and later that day you are in PP, no problem. When you are ready to leave Cambodia, you can take a bus, van, taxi or boat to the Thai border and are again issued a 'visa on arrival'. Tales of Asia is probably the best website for info on all things concerning Cambodia. Good Luck
there are lots of boat-trips from thailand to laos over the mekong river, heard lots of good stories about it and planning to do it next month. there are also lots of sites about the trips
You must be joking!! Europe to Singapore over land is crazy.
This was first done in the 1950's by 2 teams from Cambridge and Oxford Uni sponsored by Land Rover. It was made into a series in the UK hosted by David Attenborough, and was a massive success. I recently watched a documentary on it and they concluded that it was pretty much impossible to do this trip today.
I experienced Laos as not very safe. Check you foreign ministry website. They should be able to tell you something about safety in every country. But what countrys are you passing through from europe to singapur over land? Do you have to worry about Laos then?
Yes, it is perfectly safe to cross Laos in order to get from Vietnam to thailand. First, it depends on which part of Vietnam are you going to travel from. Basically, you'll need to choose either to cross via Laos or Cambodia.
In Vietnam, you can choose to cross the border at Lao Bao (which is near Dong Ha and Hue, you can station yourself there before doing the crossing) to enter Laos. The border is abit dodgy, but it is perfectly safe to cross. Once you enter Laotian territory, make your way to Savannakhet. From there you can arrange transport to Pakse, which is a border town. You can enter Thailand from here. The nearest Thai town is Ubon Ratchatani. You'll be able to make your way to Bangkok from here (11 hour or so train ride).
Alternatively, you can make it to Thailand through Cambodia. From Ho Chi Minh, you can book HCMC-Phnom Penh tickets from local operators (Happy Tours/ TM Brothers - reliable).I personally recommend this route as you'll surely want to stop by Angkor Wat. From Siem Reap, get bus tickets to Bangkok. And they are fairly cheap (USD8?, I have forgotten). Speaking of this, there is something about Laos and its laidbackness and great people that you'll not want to miss!
You certainly can attempt the northern Loas/Vietnam border from Hanoi, but tales from unfortunate travellers left stranded at the border by local operators and forced to bribe immigration officers to enter Laos leaves me hesitant to recommend this route..
Hope you'll enjoy your trip!!!
