ZazuToo has indicated that this thread is about USA

I will be in Anchorage in August for about a week. My better half will be in conferences during the day and I will be free. Any suggestions of things not to miss?

thanks,
Suzanne

Anchorage in August... That is a good time to take some flight-seeing tours, but things are starting to cool off then (in late August) and the days are shortening up a bit (also in late August). I would reccomend taking a day trip out to Thunderbird Falls it's a waterfall about 30 minutes outside of Anchorage. It's about a mile hike in... If you want somewhere with no walking there is Mirror Lake also about a half hour out of Anchorage and you can drive up to it. There is Portage Glacier too, it is about 45 minutes out of Anchorage going the other direction. It is a glacier that is near death, but you can drive up to it and they have a great visitor's center that shows the life-cycle of a glacier.

If you feel more venturous there is a Marine Life Center about 2.5 hours headed south in a town called Seward. It's a wonderfull center that showcases a wide variety of Alaskas Marine Life.

I've got a ton of ideas as I grew up in Anchorage. Send me a message telling me what you like if you want some other ideas.

Ian

That is not very nice to say about Alaska. Alaska has the highest number of rapes PER CAPITA than any other state. It is important to make this distinction because with only half a million people in the whole state 1/20th the population of NYC not including the rest of New York, or 1/4 the population of Seattle, again not including the rest of the state.

This gives Alaska a dispraportionately high % of rapes, and other crimes when national statistics are figured.

Another thing you will find is that crime in Alaska goes up in the winter and is relatively low in the summer.

Don't get me wrong now. In Anchorage, (pop 300,000 or so) like any other place you travel to you should be aware of your surroundings and take any of the precautions you would anywhere else in the USA, or the rest of the world. Just don't let the numbers fool you, except in certain areas of Anchorage there is very little street crime, and even in the "dangerous" areas you will find it does not compare to what other cities have to offer.

Didn't mean to offend you. Yes, per capita they have the highest rates of rape. Just saying, if this poster is a woman, she should be careful.

Info about the Anchorage Police Department and Alaska in regards to this:

Anchorage police department:
--The city has on average 122 percent more rapes than any other city in the country.
--because of understaffing, 23 percent of sexual assaults cannot be investigated
--Receives 4,000 domestic violence calls a year, but only one detective working the domestic violence unit

The Women’s eNews wrote a story that talked about sexual assault cases and how some of the remote villages in Alaska handled such cases. A woman named Amy Maio worked for a group that helped rape victims and she told the paper that she had recently counseled a woman whose boyfriend had raped her five-year-old daughter. The woman told Maio that she had recently moved to the remote village and believed her new family and community would protect and support her after the sexual assault on her child. "She found that her boyfriend's entire family was supporting him," Maio told the newspaper. "They either didn't believe she was telling the truth, or they didn't feel what he had done was such a bad thing."

Because many people don’t report sexual assault and because of communities like the one Maio described, it is hard to get an exact number of how many sexual assaults occur each year in Alaska. “There are wildly varying estimates about the actual rates of sexual assault as compared to reported sexual assaults from different groups,” said an Anchorage Police officer.

Really didn't mean to offend, but as a woman I felt that others should be on guard. I'm sure the city is great.

No offence taken, sorry to drag on about this, I was just pointing out the fact that New York City, my current home has about as many rapes per month (by volume) as my childhood home, Anchorage has per year.

I think women, and men for that matter should always be cautious when they travel, escpecially when travelling alone. I just hate to see people becoming fearfull of travelling to a place rather than just cautious.

It's like one poster noted a few weeks ago. After he had travelled around the world and throughout the third world, he finally was robbed... In his home town of Brighton England.

Ian
