We are driving from Kaikoura to Wanaka via Greymouth on Arthur's Pass and need to know how long it's likely to take incase we will need to stay the night somewhere on the way?

Please help?

wow, that's kinda the long way around... You could probably do it in about 10 hours if you went kaikoura, christchurch, geraldine, twizel, wanaka, but if you're really doing arthur's pass (not lewis pass?) I'd guess 7 hours kaikoura, christchurch, arthur's pass, frans josef, and another 5-6 franz josef, haast, wanaka.

  • hunts around for driving map with distances*

Kaikoura-Christchurch: 2:50
Christchurch-Wanaka: 6:30 (I don't know if that is via Timaru or Geraldine, but I'd definitely go via Geraldine even if it's longer; the Mackenzie country you'd be driving through that way looks truly superb).
9:20 total, plus extra time for stops: 10 hours.

Kaikoura-Christchurch: 2:50
Christchurch-Hokitita: 3:50
Hokitita-Wanaka: 6:55
13:35 total, plus extra time for stops: 14.25 hours.
If you do go that way around, Franz Josef Glacier (or Fox Glacier, both about an hour south of Hokitita) is probably the most attractive place to spend the night, as well as near ideally placed.

Oh, and if you went to the West Coast over Lewis' Pass (so would actually go through Greymouth, but not through Arthur's Pass), the distance Kaikoura-Hokitita would take 6:20, so you'd save 20 minutes.

Make surre you go the the cinema in Wanaka.

Great comfy sofas and chairs to sit on, and during the interval you can get home made chochip cookies baked fresh. Well worth the ticket price.
