Yes, you are correct. Online accounts (card issuing side) certainly help. Trust me I have no intention to defend asiarooms, simply wanted to bring some light on this issue.
Overall I think the refund situation is a sticky issue. No one wants a third party to hold monies.
Avoid this site. It originates from Thailand. Very unreliable and information on the hotel is not accurate at all. I made a booking once and turned up at the hotel without room! I travels twice a month and always use other sites such as hotelclub, hoteltravel, rates-to-go, etc.
I have booked with Asiarooms.com and have been waiting 6 days for confirmation of the accomodation? Should i be concerned?
I have never booked with asiarooms before, bit hesitated after i read all the negative/positive comments about them, but i still booked it anyway. A few minutes after i hit the key to book the hotels in Jakarta, i got txt to confirm my booking. We have no problems and both hotels we booked even had the rooms ready before the check in time. Can't find any cheaper rate on line but asiarooms.Keep up the good work and we will use your service again in the future as we go holiday every year.
I have booked with asiarooms on the last two years. I havent problems but the fares now are a bit hight.

I do not understand why anyone would be giving credit card details to book a hotel room before knowing if it was available or not.
I know at least 10 or more hotel booking companies and services to book hotels where you certainly do not need to give your credit card to make an enquiry.
You request the hotel or a choice of hotels, you will get an answer very fast or at least within that day, they then give you the option for 2 days to either accept or forget it.
If you want the booking you pay for 1 night deposit and then pay the rest of the bill about 2 weeks before you arrive, and these are cheap rates. Lots of booking services do that and I cannot understand why people are happy to pay so long in advance and then have the problem with a change of plans.
I use various services and sometimes even after booking they can change dates just so long as the hotel has rooms on those dates, no charges at all.
You can also get good rates and pay just 1 night deposit, easy.
For refunds it is only an 'input' into the machine to 'credit' an amount to someone's card, this happens 'all the time' when you use your card to rent a car or check in to a hotel, they run your card through and then you pay on that or otherwise they just 'type in your number, the amount, and press a particular button' and that wipes-off the amount from your card it is that simple!

I've just returned from Southeast Asia again and all my bookings through Asiarooms (all two of them this time) were correct no problems at all. One in Chiang Mai and the other in Singapore.

I recently tried to book rooms with Asiarooms in Ho Chi Minh City. I tried for days before my travel date (13th August 2007) to book 2 rooms but everything I tried was unavailable. Finally, the afternoon before I was due to fly, not having heard from them, I called a hotel in HCMC and managed to get a hotel that Asiarooms claimed is full. I realised 5 days later (while travelling in Vietnam) that Asiarooms had sent me an email to confirm a room at 12 pm of the day I was due to arrive in HCMC. I was at that time already on flight. I had no idea they do confirmation on the day itself and they went ahead to deduct money from my credit card, without my reply or my consent (I had no idea cuz I was already in Vietnam). They have not refunded so far and I've written them 2 emails, called their office in Bangkok to no avail. I think it is truly a dodgy site. Also, the one room I was able to get, the photos did not match the hotel and I end up paying quite a lot for a horribly shabby hotel. I think they have people write fake reviews. I wrote a review on the hotel and that was never reflected.
To answer your question, they do not ask you before they deduct money from your credit card.

I'm sorry to hear of your problem with Asiarooms. When I post here I'm talking about my own experiences with Asiarooms. I must admit I've had no real problems with them. I was in Malaysia KL and Kuching in June 2007 and both Hotels were through Asiarooms again for me there were no problems at all. I'm returning to KL and Kuching in December 2007 again So far I have one hotel booked and confirmed with Asiarooms and I'm currently waiting for confirmation of another hotel with them, and I'm not expecting any problems. I always book well in advance so if any problems arise there is time to sort them out.
I also use other websites for hotels. I always believe in shopping around for a good price. Asiarooms are not always the cheapest. One thing I don't like about asiarooms is the fact they deduct your credit card as soon as the reservation is confirmed. Other companies like "Asia Web Direct" they take 10% when booking is confirmed and you pay the balance to the hotel. Another company I use is "Hoteltravel" they take the full amount about 10 days before you use the hotel.
I'm almost certain that asiarooms are just the middle men (agents) for other companies. When you print out the voucher you get when the hotel is confirmed you will notice at the bottom of the voucher a different company will pay the hotel. Some of the companies I have on my vouchers are :- 1. Asian Trails Malaysia. 2. Pacific World Malaysia. 3. Gullivers Travel Associates. I did try contact one of these companies and received a quote for a hotel but then they said they could not make a reservation for me at that time.

Worst thing I've ever encountered with an agent named Nickie, I called just a while ago supposedly hoping for an information to if I book Tohsang Ubon will there be free pick-up tansfer. She told me that for me to know, I have to book first and they will advise the hotel number to call to check if there is a free transfer or not. I told her can you please check for me but she told me she can't check or better yet, I book with the hotel directly! What an attitude!!
When I asked if there's another agent who can help me or manager (as I felt so frustrated) she told me there is no manager and if I want to compain I will have to email Asiaroom directly. I know I wasn't raising my vocie as I was even polite to ask I really needed help if she can call the hotel, I don't know why she said "Can you please come down and listen to me or i will put down phone". In frustration I did ask "so you mean it's better for me to book directly with the hotel?" she responded that i can do that if i want then she hung the phone to me.
