I am leaving for Oz on 24th Arpril and planning to travel round for a year or so and wondered if anyone could advise me as what to do regarding australian bank accounts do I set one up before I leave or just take travellers cheques and cash with me and open an account when I get there??
I would be grateful of any suggestions
I believe you aren't allowed to set up bank accounts in Oz anymore before departing your home country. Even the organizations that do orientations and the like for backpackers arriving and offer the bank account set up as one of their services you can buy up front can't have the entire set up completed before the traveller actually signs off on the account (which is when they arrive).
On the other hand, it's easy to set up a bank account down under so nothing to worry about there. I had a Commonwealth Bank account which required 0 dollars to set up but I hear they are slightly tougher nowadays with backpackers so a lot of organizations have switched to using ANZ instead. It's all the same though really and I am sure there are other good options. The main thing is that they have some decent ATM coverage around the country as you pay to deduct money from another banks ATM machine
Enjoy the travelling!!!
hi ya, i have just set up an account in australia with a company called @work and travel@ you can find it on the net. it was 99 pound but it give you extra stuff such as internet free, help finding a job that you want to do, and will also help claim your tax code over there which costs around about 30.00. and then it collects your tax for you when you depart that country, well worth it.
Hi Kirst Ann,
Yes, I am pretty familiar with them. What happens is they pre-arrange your bank account. You still have to sign off on it when you get there I believe and then get your card sent to you, but it is nice to know in advance someone has looked into the best account type for backpackers. It's not for everyone, but at that price you can't really go wrong can you
