chevette has indicated that this thread is about Argentina

I am going on a cruise that passes through Argentina. A friend told me she saw a segment on the news concerning Argentina. She said that Americans were being targeted for kidnapping because of some kind of political unrest. All I could find on the web, were some articles concerning political unrest in 2001. Is there anything going on now that I should be concerned about?

Happily it´s over... it was in critical times here but when Kidnapping was a problem NO specially for americans but yes even for argentineans (locals)... The info your friends provide you is not actual ... even been careful is good point, like in many countries I have to say... like turist guide say you have to be careful with your pocket but it´s for me too ... I must to say since I´m here back in B.A. I live in a turist area like is Congreso and we have a high level of security... You´ll see many "cartoneros" (collector) and homeless but I have to say that they are good people... theft and thief you´ll find in the same proportion than in others cityes...
please for more info and ACTUAL you can read: http://www.buenosairesherald.com/
Don´t loose the opportunity to enjoy the night in Buenos Aires and all the atraction... If is it helpful for you contact me and I will give you a turn around

Argentina is completely safe, even though American politics is an issue best left undebated... public opinion is set very heavily against the US, but that doesn't extend to individual tourists visiting. Act as 'un-American' as possible (most people in any country would appreciate that), blend in, don't be a tourist, and you'll be just fine.

Enjoy your trip,
Niels (Amsterdam, NL)

The most dangerous thing in Argentina is riding in a BA taxi.

Argentina is one of the safest countries I've ever spent some time in. There is a high police presence on the streets to ensure nothing wrong happens to anyone.

Hello,
I've been here for 12 years....yes there has been kidnappings for ransome as well as other safety problems. NO, its NOT over....just a little more tranquil....luckilly, tourist DONT make good kidanpping targets....they need locals that have $$$$ and someone to contact to bring it! Tourist encounter the more "petty thefts"....you have to be careful....dont fall for people who come up to ask you something or act "overly" nice in a strange way....I could list some of the methods they use, but, just walk away.....And stay in areas with movement. Try not to go in a bank and then catch a cab right as you come out.....they could take you for a ride....FOR ALL OF YOU THAT THINK IT ALL O.K., or thats its safe.....SORRY not yet! I was pointed at, while driving along the Panamericana, by 2 young guys with guns....they tried to stop me...but I swerved out of the problem. My brother in law with his wife just got "escorted" by 2 guys with guns....taken for a ride....dropped off in a ghetto....and left with nothing....My sister in law....also, stopped by punks with guns....My neighbors....kidnapped....for 3 days he didnt know if he'd be back home....AND DONT say....well, you live in a bad area....because we dont.....Just BE CAREFULl, and keep your eyes open....as tourists you are a little better off.

Oh and another comment....sorry I'm so negative, but I am realistic....ALL the police you see everywhere....as well as private security are all paid about $300 dollars per month in salary....somethimes less! Which means, they usually find other ways to suplement their income....LOTS of BRIBES is the less offensive way....but, they are also implicated in drug trafficing, etc....It is just TOO easy to pay off a cop here, to think you are safe....And if something does happen...you dont have 911 to call!
A friend of mine was here and he walked around a lot and just used a "walmart" plastic bag to hold his stuff....I thought thats a simple way to "down grade" your image....
