Ok, so my friends and I jumped on a good airfare from London to Athens and decided to go for 2 days in the middle of our trip to the UK. While the flight was well priced, the catch was we only have 36 hours.
What would you do in this short time in Athens, Greece? We're booked at the Athens Backpackers hostel if anyone has any insight on that, too.
I pretty much did the same thing last summer. I stayed at Athens Backpackers, which is by the way the best hostel I have stayed at. Ask for advice at the desk, they know EVERYTHING! It is close to Acropolis, about 5 minutes walk.
I had just about the same amount of time there this summer and I stayed at the Athens Backpacker's too....honestly, I wasn't as impressed with it as most people were, but I may have caught it on a bad night. If at all possible, avoid sleeping in the basement. I've never been one to freak out or go hypocondriac about anything, but that was probably the worst night's sleep I had on my entire month long trip...it's WAY below ground level - no natural light, and no ventilation.
Honestly, I'm not one to bitch, but I had one SHITTY night's sleep there.
Aside from that, all we really did was wander the Plaka district, see the main sights (Acropolis, etc..), buy a couple of last minute gifts to bring back home, and sample Gyros. There wasn't really time for much else, but it was cool.
Hope you enjoy the trip!
Oh, and you probably shouldn't put too much stock in my bad review of the Athens Backpacker's Hostel - I didn't have a reservation so I got put in the basement, and I honestly think I just caught 'em on a bad night.
