This thread is marked as being about USA

Hi - am new here and want to plan a driving trip from LA to San Fransisco and then back again via another route.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any advice

If you have time, take Highway 1. It's along the coast, slow, curvey, and beautiful.

You have three choices...I-5 will take about six hours and be mostly lacking in anything interesting. Hwy. 101 will take 7-8, and will be prettier and take you through some nice cities such as Santa Barbara. Hwy. 1 will take nine or more hours. It starts with 101 for the south half of the journey. Past that, from Morro Bay to Monterey, it's one of the most beautiful highways in the country.

If you have the time, I'd suggest splitting the trip in half and stopping overnight along the way, particularly if you take Hwy 1. Hearst Castle in San Simeon is a fun place to visit and nearby Cambria a good place to spend the night.

i agree, i-5 is fast and nothing to see except that stinky cow farm; and you will wish you missed it... if you want to hurry to san franciso take this route

Highway 1 will take you a very long to time to get to san francisco, so if you have plenty of time and like to sight see take this route.

Not knowing your time constraints I would agree with previous posters about taking two days and driving up highway 1.

For the return journey, if sufficient time allows, you could try driving back via this route taking in Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Sequoia.

to stay some days in SF is worth it! It is just an charming and amazing city! I love that city! You can do so many things and get never tired!
Yosemite is worth going and Lake Tahoe as well. The California Coast is very nice, so I would recommend you going this way!
