I see this question posted in different ways, and numerous times, but I have to ask the question in a way that is tailored to my situation.

I will be in Australia from Feb 1st till March 1st.

I estimate that I need $1,000 US (1,300 Aussie Dollars)

I will most likely be travelling by bus, and I am not trying to stay in nice hotels, but mostly hostels, and cheap places. I won't eat at restaurants every night, and won't be going out to bars constantly either.

Does my budget seem appropriate to you guys?

Hi im new to this forum, im traveling to Oz with my friend Jimbob9876 in april....

Anyway, $1300 Aus Dollars for 1 month = $325 per week = $46 per day

You need to think about how much you're gonna spend on average per day. How much is a hotel per night? how much will food/drink per day? plus other activites.

I would work out how much you would plan on spending, then total it all up, and then take a bit more, just incase.

Dan.

Thank you, smithy, but that is the question. I don't know how much I will spend on hotels, and I don't know how much I will spend eating and drinking.

That is what I was hoping some experienced travellers, or Aussies could tell me. How much they spend when out and about.

Like I said, budget will dictate most of my adventures, so it will be all about cheap hostels, cheap food, and cheap women. Oops, forget that last one. But yeah, cheap everything, with the occasional bar hopping to meet the locals.

Thanks for any and all replies.

You don't say where in Australia you'll be going, which matters a lot. A hostel in Melbourne or Sydney can easily be twice as expensive as outside the big cities (although of course really cheap hostels can be found in the cities as well; it's just that you get what you pay for). And of course transport - if you're on the road every other day, you're going to spend a lot more than if you take only four or five buses during that month.
That said, things seem possible on that budget, but they'll be awfully tight. I'd recommend having $500 more so you can splurge a bit on a tour or activity somewhere and stay in smaller dorm rooms and generally not have to count every last penny.

This differed a lot, but my general travelling lifestyle (bus or train every four or five days, smaller dorm rooms, cooking own dinners from cheap supermarket ingredients) made me need about $50-$60 a day.
A small dorm room in a reasonable to nice hostel in Melbourne or Sydney will be $25-$30. Every hour spent in the bus will cost you roughly $10 (starts out more expensive, becomes cheaper as the distance grows, but not much, and you'll then have extra costs for food at roadside stops).

Good point Sander. I will start in Sydney, and travel up the east coast then onto Darwin. Hmm. Perhaps I will try to only spend 3 weeks in OZ, since I am also going to SE Asia after the Australian leg. I wonder how it will be covering that much ground in only 3 weeks. I suppose that is a different thread all together.

Thank you guys!!

Any other estimates welcome too.
