Leo_arg has indicated that this thread is about Argentina

Has anybody crossed the argentinian-chilean border throug the "Paso de Jama"? I will be spending New Year at Tilcara, Argentina, and from there I would like to go to Atacama...
Any advice will be helpful!
Leo.

Hi Leo,

Nice plan, I envy you :-)

I've been in the region two years back, and although I haven't travelled your desired route myself, I seem to remember that other people found the connections a problem. Consult the tourist office in Tilcara; they were very knowledgeable when I was there. Else you may find that the SA handbook is much better on border crossings than LP. One general comment when crossing the Arg-Chil border; don't pay fees to the guards. If they insist, ask for an official, stamped receipt and watch their courage melt away :-)

enjoy, and let me know your experiences on this route,

Niels (Amsterdam, NL)

Hi Niels....after all those trips to SA I consider you should be speaking spanish by now, am I wrong?
I tell you, I am porteño! and of course, I love the Andean region...I ve been several times to Jujuy by now; and crossed the border, but not through the Paso de Jama. My question was; there isn´t any bus going that way, there is?
By the way, this will be my route:
BsAs-Santiago del Estero, where they will be waiting for me with a "corderito"; a delicius typical dish..from there I head to Tilcara to spend New Year, but of course I will have to pay a visit to the other little villages....Maimará, Purmamacarca...what a pity!
After that I will go to Atacama desert, and then I go south. May be I will be crossing the border again at Santiago de Chile, in order to spend some days in Mendoza and San Luis.

Once you live 24 years in Argentina, you ll get used to these practices..

I will keep you informed of my route, should you be visiting us again, don´t hesitate in writing.

Friends of mine had crossen to Argentino by Paso Jama, but it was quite years ago and in a car. In summer you shouldn't expect problems in a good car, but in winter could be temporary close by the snow. I know is a common paso for trucks, but don't know if exist a bus that take these route, at least, I've not heard of it.

I crossed the Paso de Jama this winter (july) in a car. It rarely
closes, but may due to snow. There are also busses going from Salta or
Jujuy to San Pedro do Atacama. Maybe this can be helpful:
