I am planning a trip to Russia in Sept-Oct 2006 to visit St-Petersburg, Moscow, Volgograd, and Kursk => Focus is the Battlefields of WWII/ Great Patriotic War. I plan to spend about 3 days in the first three cities and 2 days in Kursk => About 11 days total.
That leaves at least 9 days for other stuff, hopefully less depressing... any suggestions for an additional 1-2 spots/areas? No ultra-touristy stuff please.
the great Patriotic War! thats brilliant! i would love to do this trip - just read Stalingrad as well. Wh ynot head to the Black Sea Coast?
Sochi and Dagomys seem like reasonalble choices. I would be there in late September/early October, ie., after the main tourist season. Anyone have any first hand knowledge of these spots?
There seems to be a 4 day trek to Mount Fisht nearby. I wonder if you can rent a tent, sleeping bag and camp stove in Sochi? I would probably have to bring my own stuff and carry them all over Russia to use them for only 4 days? Is this trek worth it? It would certainly be a nice break from all the "city" stuff.
These destinations may be pleasant surprises, much like the Island of Rugen and the Spreewald (Germany) were last fall => very touristy spots but wonderfull after tourist season.
I would spend longer in St. Petersburg. It is such a beautiful city, and there are just so many things to see there. YOu can go to all those places close to the city like Peterhoff, Pushkin, Gatchina. Those are not depressing places even though they were basically destroyed during WWII. I also liked Nizhni Novgorod which is about 4 hours away from St.P. (i think...)
