Hitchhiking to Melbourne from Sydney

I realize most websites and travel zines as this do not suggest hitchhiking as a .... "ideal" means of getting from A to B. HOWEVER, is hitchhiking from Sydney to Melbourne(mildura actually) a ridiculous idea?

Is there enough small towns (about 100kms apart) to do it safely and logistically:i'm thinking water wieght-carried. Is it some bad arid bush or tropical? is there room to pitch a tent on the side of the road if need be? i priced bus tickets but i think i'd rather save my money and try the experiance of walking/hitching it.
Any thoughts?

Much Thanks
Shane from Halifax

Hi Shane,
I really recommend that you dont hitchhike, just like anywhere else, there are crazys out there. A lot of people, including guys have been kidnapped and murdered when hitchhiking. Australia is very desolate in many areas, and people would never know where you are.

However, you can get a Virgin Blue flight www.virginblue.com.au for like $30 sometimes, so thats how I would do it.

Sorry buddy, but its also really illegal.
Good luck on your trip though!

You'll be as mad as a box of frogs if you do that mate. Post messages on forums or put up notices in hostels as you might be able to do a share with other backpackers.

That fails it's cheap enough on the bus.
