People who swim the bays for exercise - every day - in places such as Bondi all wear speedos, as do many who don't. Despite some of the fashion victims commenting in this forum you will find that for the most part us beach locals don't really care what you wear. I think Ozclaire must be from the desert or shortsighted if she thinks nobody wears speedos. You will also find that most of the people you refer to as old guys with beer guts are local surf legends who have been representing their communities in Surf lifesaving for 30 or more years. They are the pillars of our beach communities, and usually swim everyday, rain or shine. They get a lot of respect around here unlike some on this site who only see old men with beer guts wearing what they've always worn.

From my experience of both speedos and more skimpy types of swimwear on the market I would have to say I prefer a man in a board-short.

However, that is not to say that whilst in Australia my eye was not turned by the odd speedo-wearing man. The choice, as always, is yours. I hung around with loads of German people in Oz, all of whom wore speedos and were not only proud of their lycra assets but frowned upon those who they deemed not man enough to sport a pair of speedos.

I say God Speedo and enjoy your trip budgie smuggling style.

Hi

Speedo type men’s swimwear must be popular in Australia because they are the biggest brand seller each year since Noah bought Speedos. True most guys wear them under their board shorts but many wear Speedos to the beach, pool, lake or creek. Most guys with home pools swim in Speedos. We wear them for competitive, lap and fitness swimming at the pool.

We are a very tolerant group of people and generally accept you whatever you wear.

We also can laugh at ourselves and each other and will do so on many occasions. We don't take life or ourselves too seriously. We do what we want and let others do the same.

Go on wear those Speedos and enjoy our carefree life. Don't wear thongs (ultra brief swimwear that is). Thongs on the feet are ok especially if they are smelly, dirty and totally worn out.

Some young aussie women try to pretend they don't like guys Speedos
because they watch to much American television and don't have alife. They would like like to be ultra conservative Christian Right girls but can't just manage it. The trouble is that conservative America does not suit the Australian life style because we are very ordinary people, even those of us who are christian and wear Speedos!

This thread reminds me of when I was in Manly (Sydney) a couple of years ago.

The beach life guards - fit, muscular guys, all lined up and wearing their bright red speedos with the word MANLY emblazoned across their arses. One of the funniest and certainly the campest thing I saw during my time in Oz!:)

Whats being Christian got to do with it?
And just because people watch American TV doesnt mean people dont have lives and all the American people ive met were fantastic and ORDINARY people.

Not sure exactly what to class as ordinary?

Thinkin that maybe it doesn't need over-analysing - speedo's, shorts, boardies, pants..........variety is the spice of life!?
