Second to mally! I call my moneybelt a bra, and I pretty much wear it everywhere. hee hee!

Rick Steves has a really good one available (ha ha--a real moneybelt, that is) through his web site. My husband and brother both have one.

If you're a girl and tend to wear tight clothing, a money belt is a big fashion no-no. I've never used one and haven't yet had any problem carrying my money and documents. Just carry a bag that's easy to hold-on to and be vigilant.

Quoting maba

I'm still experimenting myself and have alternated between 'bum bag'(I believe it's called a 'Fanny Bag' in the US!! but that's another story) and money belt for passports, travellers cheques, tickets and soft important paperwork like that.

The bum bag is better as you have quick acces to the passport & tickets but, is bulky. It's ok if you have a loose shirt and can cover it.

Fanny packs have a lot of disadvantages compared to money belts. The biggest one is that the baddies know exactly where your valuables are, just as if you were carrying a camera around your neck, or if you had a purse or shoulder bag. That gives them an advantage in trying to pickpocket or even snatch and grab for your stuff - especially since most fanny packs just take two fingers to release the buckle especially in a tight crowd.

Since they'd have to go under your clothes to get near a money belt, neck wallet or drop loop wallet you'd be much more likely to notice.

Yes DocNy,
I agree that 'bum / fanny bags' ('fanny' has a very different connotation in countries with a British heritage... lol) can be a nuisance and generally a secure option. Friends of ours use them ALL the time.
The one I have has a security cable running through the belt which can also be locked. It is very secure in that it cannot be removed from your body without taking you with it.
I have used it when travelling to have easy access to tickets, boarding passes, passports, entry documents and other necessary important bulky items on international flights.

I generally don't use it once I have arrived at my destination, the hidden money belt is adequate, but it was at times uncomfortable while in SE Asia recently when the weather was quite hot..

I use my selfmade Money Belt.

take a little Gast-Towel or washcloth
fold it in half
sew at the open part some velcro
befor you sew the sides together attach on one side elastic, make it the size that you can wear it around your hip.
if you use elastic on top and bottem of this small Bag you can wear it also around your upper leg.
the material is very userfriendly, not sticky or bulky.
since I have allways to travell with a lot of cash (I buy things at markets)I wear at the beginning of a trip 3 of them.

easy to make and good!

sunny greetings

Money belts are great if you get one that is comfortable and can take what you want.
Most of my kit has some form of liners so, i keep stuff in them. that way nothing is in one place (you don't lose all at once type of thing).
Agree with Gelli on the photocopies too.

Dont forget that if you are travelling with a moneybelt everybody will know you are a tourist. I just keep my wallet in my jeans and no one knows I am tourist. You can ad a small chain from wallet to your jeans for protection.

Don't forget to enjoy your trip,

Kind regards,

Bjorn

Down with money belts!

Money belts are:

  • Uncomfortable
  • Annoying
  • Everyone knows tourists have them
  • Stuff barely fits
  • Uncomfortable
  • They get all sweaty
  • ...did I mention they are annoying?

I say just carry your wallet in one of your front pockets, if you feel someone reaching around in there (that shouldn't be), just do a quick flying-round-house and problem solved.

Money belts are an interesting topic.

On my first set of travels I wouldn't have done without it! however I came to realise that a lot of thieves knew about these things too, and it just tempted me to carry all my important documents around with me!

I say best to try not to go out with much money in any case, in rio I never walked out of the hostel with more than a few reais with me, the rest I hid in various places in my locked bag or in a safe at the hostel.

If I did need more money I strapped my purse to my leg under a sock or in my underwear

secret pockets are also a really good idea, sew in some extra ones to your clothes,

good luck any way either way you should do what you feel safest and most comfortable doing! Also I think it totally depends on the areas your travelling to.

take it easy
