Mcf1 has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Me and my two flatmates have randomly decided to go to Melbourne for three nights. Was just wandering what we can check out and where the best watering holes are. We are 18, 20 and 24. If any one has suggestions, that would be awesome!

Cheers

Are you a "nightclub" person or a "pub" person :) There's young and jackson opposite Flinders Street Station that has a touristy reputation :) (Although expensive). Going to crown casino you will come accross The Pub and some nightclubs to access. It's been awhile since I've been out on the town in Melbourne as I'm from Geelong but Crown Casino is where we usually go :) Others may be able to give you some more insight!

Check out Victoria Market for cheap stuff (Elizabeth Street). And the Docklands is getting better each time I go down to Melbourne.

Thanks for those tips, I’m into pubs and clubs. Probably do pubs one night and clubs the next?? Who knows but the Casino is good advice.

And I'm into engineering and technology type stuff. Are there any museums of technology or things like that to do during the day. I’m also going to go to Albert Park. Pity it’s not during GP weekend but I've always wanted to check it out!!

I’ve also heard there is free Beer on Tuesday nights and some pub. Is this true? What Pub is this?

I welcome any suggestions!!

Cheers.

Don't listen to majito, he's just jealous ;)

Pubs and clubs huh? Sorry, I don't go clubbing much, so can't be much help there.. Some places for drinks though:

  • Cookie on Swanston Street - Good international beers on tap and some amazing food. My personal favourite.
  • Brunswick Street - just go there and choose the pubs/bars that appeal to you, there's plenty of choice.
  • Yelza on Gertrude Street (off Brunswick St) - nice Russian theme and a phenomenal beer garden.
  • Gertrudes on Gertrude Street (the other side of Brunswick St) - a fairly quiet place usually, but cozy and I kind of like the feel.

Actually, there's no end of good places and many I haven't been to myself. Check out www.melbournepubs.com for a list with reviews. Often the ones down back alley ways in the city are the best - problem is I can hardly ever remember how to get there ;)

Personally, I'd give Crown a miss. To me it's just a large commercial institution that doesn't capture the Melbourne culture in the slightest. I prefer to avoid it. To each their own though

As for technology, there is the Science Museum - never been, though I would imagine it being somewhat kid focussed. Maybe ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) would be more of interest. It's housed in the Federation Square complex and has some pretty cool exhibits on from time to time. If you're feeling cultured, you could drop in at the National Gallery of Victoria afterwards :)

Never heard of the 'free beer on Tuesday' pub unfortunately - let me know if you find out

The Parade in Williamstown has funky bars n cafes, get train from flinderstreet or a ferry from south bank.

Nice cocktails at "the pub" in casino.

love the corner in richmond too n good grub there too n cheap, upstairs garden is funky as well.

Backpacker bars lke red eye at base st.kilda is funky, have a cool kiwi barman there too whos a laugh n often good dj;s too.

pj o brians is a good backpabker pub too. but most bars on fitzroy street st.kilda are whewre it all happens, very funky place n busy at weekends n holidays.

go to the belgian beer garden on st kilda rd...
or the espy on st kilda esplanade -- they often have good music in both the front bar (free) or the back room (generally cover charge) and it is near the beach.
