I would like to do my PADI licence as economically as possible, and advice received ranged from Koh Tao in Thailand to Perhentian Island Malaysia.
Has anyone recently completed their PADI and have a good place at a reasonable cost to recommend?

Hey! I did my padi licence on Ko Tao, in Big Bubble, in three days, first day is theory and then two days in water. when you pay for the diving, they give you the discount for bungalow, as I remember.. I cant remember the prices though, but they are similar anywhere on the island. but it was fun, and these european instructors are really good..
Anyways, Ko Tao is very famous of diving, and they offer like hundreds of little companies where you can get a Padi license.. Hope this helps

I learnt to dive in Nha Trang, Vietnam which was marginally cheaper than Koh Tao in Thailand and the diving slightly better (so our instructor told us anyway).

The standards were excellent, interms of training and equipment, and somewhat better than we found in Koh Phi Phi and even Australia. The school was Octopus Diving although I understand there's been a number of personnel changes since so it may not be the same experience.

I would recommend checking out any dive operation thoroughly before booking your lessons. Look at their equipment (how new does it look, is it well maintained and stored neatly) and try to meet the instructor who will be teaching you - you really want someone you can relax and have a good time with. Make sure they have insurance and a current PADI licence.

If you choose to learn in Thailand, I've only ever heard excellent things about Lanta Divers.

Just did it two weeks ago in Sairee Beach Koh Tao, try to contact Phoenix Diver. Make sure they won't the diving session firstly. If so, they will provide free accomodation.
