You could just get a cab outside the terminal. It'll cost around $30 - $40 dollars. Just make it seem like you know NY well in case the cab driver tries to rip you off

Actually if you take a cab, don't take a ride from a cabbie at all. It is illegal for cabbies to pick you up at JFK or Laguardia. There is a concierge outside of every terminal in a little hut who arranges pre-paid taxi rides by taxis liscensed to work at the airport. There has been a string of robberies by unlicensed NYC taxis at airports in the past few years as I understand it.

What day are you flying in? I'll schlep out there and give you a ride back to Manhattan if you come in while I'm not at work...

Also you can take a cab to a Long Island Rail Station for a lot less than a cab to the city, from there you can transfer to a train that will go to Penn station in the city.

About $12 I believe to Penn Station.

Howard Baech subway station is nextt o jfk airport. You can get a shuttle bus from airport to the subway, then its a few dollars to get into the city.
