Can someone give me some advice on setting up a UK bank account please! Also can someone tell me what is the best way to store money- I've been hearing about cash passports- which are electronic travellers cheques- they seem ok! Or should I just get a credit card? What does everyone else do??
I've done some research in NZ and there are usually ways of opening a bank account in the UK via a bank in your own country. But I think you have to have proof that you are going there. I don't know where you are but the first thing I would check is the banks in your town/country. You may also need a certain amount to deposit into your account.
I recently set up my UK bank account through Travelex. The bank account is with HSBC and once i arrive in UK i have to go to the head branch in London to show the original copies of my documents and i will then be given the atm cards etc. Travelex charge $100 to do this, and a minimum deposit of 1500 pound ($3700 approx) was needed.
i thought this was pretty easy to do, and i have heard that it is very difficult over there to set one up. So at least i dont have that hassle when i first get there!
The website has more details for you, but let us know if you want some more info.
It takes 5 weeks to process... so allow yourself enough time before heading over
Someone suggested to me earlier that you set up a bank account with a british bank that has a branch in your home country. It is suppose to be easier to transfer that account to the UK. I think that they have bank branches in all major Australian cities. I am not sure if this works, but it seems like something to try. Good luck!!!
www.1stcontact.co.uk is the best bet. They do all the paperwork for you. Contact them when you arrive.
I hate to be stupid but... why are you trying to open a bank account there? can't you just use your existing bank account and use a debit card from it?
I plan on working in the UK for a while and from what I have heard- you need to have a UK bank account!
Thanx for your help everyone! :-)
