So Central and South America are my next destinations but which language would it be best for me to learn and how easy is it to pick up?

Hey Bubba! Nice to see you back!!!!

I have moved your thread because I think you will get the best responses here in CA/SA! And, hopefully you will get a response from Macachae - who is a Spanish teacher and very helpful!

My suggestion would be Spanish - which should get you through most countries and is the easiest of the 3 to learn. But, that's just my thought on it. I'm sure others will be of more help!

Anyway - hope you have had a great time so far and that you enjoyed your short visit home. Have fun in CA/SA!!! ;)

Hubby (he's Brazilian) often tells me that it is easier for someone who speaks brasilian portuguese to understand Spanish, than for a Spanish speaker to understand portuguese. I would suggest that you learn Spanish at first, once you master the language it will be easier to learn the other ;)

Thanks Isadora!!!
Let´me say you that it´s a good question to do before a journey...
I recommend you to learn the general spanish so you´ll have grammatical structure of the language and after during you´re journey you´ll catch the "lovely" difference accent into south-america, It´s small but sometime even funny.
talking about portuguess of course is a different language, similar to spanish us english or italian or french, because they can from "the mother" Latin language.
looking so far like an Hebrew speaker (Ispeak fluenty this language)
I easly can felt in the terrible mistake to say that those language easy to understand... But the fact is that YOU LEARN THE LANGUAGE YOU LEARN THE CULTURE... Argentine and Brazil are in the same continent but in the same way "close and far"...
(even I´m argentinean I truly teach the general Spanish because like a well traveled girl I like to have the big idea and after the particular)
