I think its safe to say that you should carry a passport with you wherever you go in the world. Why risk having to deal with these problems?

It's not as if he went straight to the airport without even knowing what he needed. He took the time to ask the propper question to the airline people. U might argue that the airline is not the one to ask such thing. If that's the case, then the airline should tell u who to ask to, or in the worst case "i dont know, fuck off and find it for yourself". At least if they do that u don't end up being deported.

Lay the smack on them :)

Officially, the airlines position is that they are not responsible for documentation required to travel. The mistake made by AA in the case, in my opinion, is that one of their agents answered the question. The agent should have been instructed to tell the OP to call the Costa Rican embassy for documentation requirements.
