Really young travellers like to stay in the Khao San Road area. Other travellers like to stay in Siam or the Sukumvit area to take advantage of the Skytrain rapid travel service. There is an Airport Bus to take you into town if you arrive at the airport before midnight. The Airport Bus costs 100 baht for the ride.

Bangkok has lots of cheap hotels in the 650 - 1300 baht range (with AirCon, HW, private toilet, etc.) How much do you want to spend? What part of town do you want to stay in?

Chiang Mai:
Montri Hotel, 2-6 Ratchadamnoen Road, at the Thapae Gate.
E-mail address: [email protected] or www.norththaihotel.com/montri.html.
AirCon, TV, HW, private toilet/bath, security box, etc. Close to many good restaurants, and internet shops, can walk to night market. New market at Thapae Gate across the street from the hotel. Different size rooms 650 to 850 baht per night.

Happy New Year.

Thanks

I've only taken the train in the other direction BKK to Chiangmai and that was the overnight sleeper train. Taking the sleeper also saves you from paying another night in a hotel. Left BKK in the evening arrived in Chiangmai around 7 or 8 in the morning. Most of the hotels will let you check in early without paying any extra money (if the room is available and clean.) If the rooms are still being used up to noon some hotels will keep your bag until a room frees up.

I would imagine that the train would take about the same time going to BKK!
