I was wondering what do foreign travellers think of the MTR system in Hong Kong on their first experience? Tell me about the good and bad experiences you had? Any helpful tips will be appreciated.

I thought the MTR was amazing. Very clean. I love that they have those little lights on the maps that tell you where you are, which way you are going and which side to exit out of.

Good to the airport as well.

I visited Hong Kong in November and it was my first stop off on my RTW trip and was travelling alone so alittle worried about getting around HK -i'd never even had much experience on the London tube but the MTR in HK is SO easy to use, really quick, clean and cheap.
All you need is a good map (i picked mine up at the airport) which shows you where all the MTR stations are, once you know what the MTR symbol looks like you see them all over the city anyway. You can also catch the MTR between the different islands of Hong Kong aswell such as Hong Kong Island and lantau.
Hope that helps.
NB. apparently the locals do not eat or drink on the MTR in order to keep it clean so bear that in mind!

Hi, I've been living in HK for 15 years, and have watched the MTR system develop. Of the many place I've visited (and I've travelled alot!) I can honestly say that there is no better public transport system than HK's MTR. It's cheap, quick, reliable and so incredibly easy to use (listen to me, I sound like an advert!).

Unless you need to go somewhere after midnight, you will never need to pay for a taxi or use a private car.

Dead easy to use.

Advice? When you arrive, get an octopus smart card. You get anything unspent and the deposit refunded when yiou leave, and it means you don't have to worry about tickets, Just wave your wallet or bag at the ticket machine when you enter. And you can even use it at places like 7-11 and McDonalds, as well as all buses, ferries, trains, MTR etc.
