Best sized hostel dorms...?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Best sized hostel dorms...?

Hi,

Im booking hostels for my trip to Oz in march/april. Any suggestions on the best sizes dorms, whether 4 or 8 share?

It may not matter i guess, i want to meet people so i was thinking 8 share, but then 4 might be more secure or that?

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

James

The main difference is that with an 8-bed dorm, you have twice as much chance of someone snoring loudly enough to be really bothersome, and twice as much chance of someone being inconsiderate enough to come in at 2 am after you've finally fallen asleep, and turn on the lights to go and look through his luggage that consists completely of crinkly plastic bags. :) (The former is nearly guaranteed in an 8-bed dorm, the latter luckily still quite rare even with seven other people.)
Only experience can tell you if you're okay with those odds. (Personally I always preferred dorm rooms that were as small as possible; if I wanted to socialize, there were always plenty of people in the lounge and kitchen.)

I would tend to agree with "sander".

The smaller dorms you tend not to have the problems like people coming later (in big groups, e.g. 4 people travelling together etc). But really it depends of the type of hostel you stay in, for example cheaper hostels, party hostels etc...

Ive stayed in 10, 8 and 4 bed dorms, but for a few extra dollars, i would go for a smaller dorm, depends what you are looking for?? loads of buddies?? or a good night sleep? lol

Talking about secure, i have the view, don't trust anybody....if you have something valuable hide it away or take it with you.

Hope that helps

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies! I see what you mean about the smaller dorms, may be i will go for the 4 shared. I was only thinking 8 shared so that i would meet more people, but didnt really consider the noise aspect. If i heard someone snoring loudly i'd probably throw something at them lol

Thanks for your opinions, much appreciated.

Cheers,
James

Personally i prefer 8-10, i never encountered anyone snoring, but then again this wouldnt bother me too much, i usually have my earphones in anyway.

I found i met more people this way, i was always the last in at night but i didnt go around making a lot of noise but its all part of the experience, I suppose there are people out there who dont have respect for others! plus the larger the dorm the cheaper it is!

I hated it when hostel rooms didnt have lockers, only one did that i stayed in but this time i'm going to get a padlock for my bag!-didnt think about that before. I was lucky enough to only have left a top behind somewhere-that or someone really needed one, lol!

Suppose it's personal preference. Try em out-move rooms. and i liked mixed dorms as well but hey!

Thanks Jas,

I guess it just depends on the hostel and the people that are there at the time. Im just booking a few hostels and then the rest when im there, so i'll book some 4 mixed shared and some 8, and see how it goes

Im definately getting some padlocks and hopefully a locker if available, not that i dont trust peeps but you never know!

PS. If i find your top when im travelling, i'll be sure to return it to you! lol. ;)

LOL! ta James-i believe it was in Brisbane!

I actually liked that top-it's stupid how i can't find one the same now-typical! It went with everything for any occasion! damn...if you find it please dont wear it and make out it's your's...ok, i said ok!! thats better.

Good luck-never know we may end up bumping into each other!

Well i will certainly keep my eye out when i get to Brisbane Jas! ;)

Dont worry, i'll only wear it just the once (incase i want to try it on for size!)... lol

Yes you never know we may bump into each other. Im in Sydney around middle of March for a bit and then East coast for end march/beginning april (i went for OzExperience in the end).

Either way, have fun travelling! I cant wait myself!
