Can anyone put my mind at rest?

Planning to stay in hostels around oz...probably sharing in dorms at some point. Has anyone had problems with theft?
I have read most have lockers is this true in most hostels?

do you have to pay extra for this service?

Any help would be great

I was in Australia for three months in 2002 and another two weeks this year and never had any problems with my theft from dorms.

Generally I'd say most travellers are pretty honest people. However I met a Korean guy in New Zealand who had his CD walkman stolen from a dorm while he was in Oz, and I also met someone in Cairns who had his entire backpack stolen (by a non-guest) but his backpack was later returned (minus his camera). When you consider all the people I have crossed paths with in dorms though this is a very small percentage.

Some hostels have lockers but not all. Lockers in the dorms are generally free (although you may need your own padlock) and lockers in reception areas generally cost a few dollars.

Generally I'd say that provided you use common sense, i.e. don't leave your wallet and electronic valuables lying around, then you won't have any problems.

And even if you don't use common sense then you'll probably still be okay. My mate was always leaving his wallet lying around while he was in Oz and no-one ever stole it. In fact on two occasions he travelled on and left his wallet behind, but on both occasions it was safely returned.

Thanks Emmett,
Thats put my mind at rest. Its only I read in some time out guide that thefts were quite rife in hostels but like you say its common sense really.
