canuckgirl has indicated that this thread is about Australia

I am going to be living in OZ in feb - i am looking to get an Apple IPOD before i go because I wont be able to live with only taking a few cds as done on previous trips. My only concern is that with the IPOD you can only charge the battery on a computer and since I will be backpacking and mainly staying in hostels I know its sometimes difficult to get to a computer and often expensive to use computer cafes. I think they have a separete charger you can buy and charge the battery using a wall unit. Mainly im concerned if its going to be super difficult to find places to charge the battery.

Any advice is appreciated.

no i found it extremly easy to find places to charge my ipod most hostels can charge it for you at the front desk along with your mobile phone most hostels have power points in the rooms just buy adapters before you go they may be a bit cheaper

You can charge them just as you would charge anything else ie mobile phone etc etc.
The come with a charger that you just plug into the mains and BINGO.
I also bought a battery pack that you charge up the same way and you connect it to the ipod and the battery lasts for 40 hours.

Are you referring to a 'standard' ipod, ipod nano or video ipod? In those cases, they come standard with a wall charger. If you're referring to the ipod shuffle, then I do vaguely remember something about it only charging off of a computer... (okay, just checked on apple and the shuffle only charges off of a computer or with an optional battery charger). In this case, I'd either buy the charger or upgrade to the ipod nano (which in my opinion is way cooler anyway :) ). Or of course you could try and win one right here on Travellerspoint

I'd have to disagree with you there reece. The little black ipod nano is a thing of beauty, and the U2 ipod, whilst cool, is not near it as far as I am concerned. But to each their own of course!

LOL CC; so right you are....

Hold on can someone just confirm that.

You are able to charge ipods from a plug socket and not just a computer?

I was just about to buy one which can hold 5000 songs or something like that. Where can you buy cheap ones. They all seem to be £200 or more at the moment. I thought they had gone down to around £100.

Yes you can charge an ipod from a plug socket

Yes, your Ipod comes with two cables, one which goes into your computer and attaches to your pod and the other which goes into a socket and attaches to your pod. These cables also double of as USB cables. You can charge your pod through your computer, or more normally through a socket that plugs directly into the wall.

As long as you have the right adapter for Oz, you'll be laughing. I took my trusty pod with me everywhere I went (Asia, Oz, NZ, USA) and had no issues charging it.

ONE WORD OF ADVICE! Don't leave it alone in a hostel charging all by itself, it might get lonely and one of the other people in hostel might decide they want to keep it company on a long term basis.

I would highly recommend bringing a pod and loading it up with as much music as possible before you go!

Good luck!
