I'm getting into Buenos Aires at the end of March and then planning to see what I can of Patagonia from the start of April. I have six weeks to play around with so I just wanted to know is it worth flying down to Tierra del Fuego at that time of the year and then working my way up on buses etc.? Or is it too cold at that stage?
you can connect many cities by bus but going to tierra del fuego by bus is not a sensible idea. you should take the plane and also a plane to move to calafate. though it can be done on land takes several hours and it is not worth it.
from calafate you begin wiht the buses, the first to chalten where you stay l night. then same company to Lake perito moreno and stay there for the cave of the hands. and then the last part to bariloche. in all take 3 days. worth it.

The weather at that time of year won't hold me back though?
Look it depend on what do you like ...
If you want to sky or trekk will be a good time for the begining of autumm but I recommend you to be update about the weather, because is impossible to predic... because this summer is coming late, but hard... About fly and bus travel check the disponibility and the time table of strikes By bus you have more options to apreciate the landsacape and same time even you can find some hitchhike back
You picked the best possible time to go there, I'd say. March is interesting, and not too cold if you take warm clothes
Usually till march you could get a "acceptabble weather" in Tierra del Fueago after that you would never know, and it´s starts to freeze
but it´s still nice time to visit the glacier in Torres del paine or the Perito Moreno In Argentina
grab a plane to the southern point you want to visit is a must, in order to save time a try to get a nice weather
