As many of you already know (and the rest of you are about to find out), I have a great, big, boring bugaboo about bad grammer and punctuation. I don't mean typos and badly written e-mails - I mean really bad, grade-school errors and incomprehensible writing that somehow ends up published in print and on Web sites that really should know better.

Take, for example, this article I found on MSN:

No Test Anxiety for Lohan

What's that supposed to mean? Is test anxiety what you get when you're trying to decide if you really want full-blown anxiety?

Or, once again off MSN, an example of a whole new word:

You had always looked with destine at your friends...

Destine? Sheesh!

Anyone else as dull as me care to come out and play? ;) Come on - you know you want to!

Strategery...

Anyone know where that one came from?

Should it be "that" or should it be "who"??? Are web sites "thats" and the people who create them the "whos"? It's all sooooo confusing!!!!!!

Sure, I'll come along to the playground with you, T!!! Granted, I make enough of my own grammatical errors, but I'm still up for a good game of Bitch and Fix-It!!!

Isa runs away to hide in her suitcase before Tina decides to start throwing pronouns and punctuation marks at her...

people = who
things (including Web sites) = that

Even when it sounds weird, Word will always correct it that way. When I get confused, I find it best to just turn the sentence around and avoid the problem altogether.

Another bugaboo: The misuse of sentences that start with "As a xx". You can't say "As my boss, I think you should promote me." That would mean I'm my own boss. The noun that comes after the comma is the subject of the first part of the sentence. A guy couldn't say, for example, "As a woman, I understand your point." See? Doesn't work.

I was picking on you with that one. But, it reminds me of another...

GUILTY!! I admit it!!!!

One that irritates me... The use of "I" and "me".
To know which one to use, make the sentence singular:

Me and my friends did such and such. Incorrect!
My friends and I did such and such. Correct!

Making the sentence singular forces the correct usage of "I". If more than "you" are involved in the action, the others are placed before you and the (action) verb.

You also live in the land of the pseudo-French; lower Canada that is. So, you can be forgiven for these occasional slight lapses in the proper usage of her Majesty the Queen's English. Due, no doubt, to the mind-altering, subsonic, telepathic waves the PQ broadcast from those so called "television stations" you have down there.....
