Ay-ay-ay. Who's been passing out the magic cookies again?

25. Posted by Cupcake (Travel Guru 8468 posts) 10y

If they were chocolate 'special' cookies...I would have ate them..and even licked up the crumbs ;)

OK, my sillies, riddle me this:

Is one supposed to say:

"If you prefer that your name remainS confidential..."

OR

"If you prefer that your name remain confidential..."

The first is technically right, but the second sounds right.

27. Posted by IronChef (Full Member 1076 posts) 10y

I would have went with the second one. And, unfortunately, I feel like that is the one you would hear most times and there's no one around that would tell you that it is improper.

My only hope is to someday catch Tway slipping up. I have a new mission - I'm gonna go thread-diving and check over everything with my red marker. ;) Careful, Tway, you're being graded.

hee hee! You won't even get a chance to count to five - I'm the typo queen! I just think the media is getting lax in their approach to grammar and punctuation - and I cringe at the ol' "ah, people will understand anyway" line. I read a job offer (in North Carolina, unfortunately) for a copywriter that included the line: "if you've spotted an error in this offer and are dying to tell someone, you're the candidate for us!". Oh, how I wanted that job!

There are definitely different forums for that. I think you are correct, though, that our media outlets need to be above reproach. I mean, they hire people for these specific purposes, right?

You'd be overqualified for that job, T. It clearly says 'someone' not 'the whole world and outlying galaxies...'
