well only three weeks to go till oz
i'm starting in melbourne and need advice on best places to see and things to do, been reading some travelling books but i need honest opinions please
i have no real plan or idea of what im doing, so please help me, i need to get on that plane!!!
Definitely go on a day-trip to Philip Island. I went with Wildlife Tours and the whole day was brilliant. The Penguin Parade was obviously the highlight, but there were also lots of little side-trips like a visit to the Dandenongs to feed wild parrots, a visit to Ramsey Street and a trip to a koala sanctuary.
Also, if you haven't booked a hostel yet then I would recommend the Victoria Hotel. The top deck has a jacuzzi, as well as a small gym and pool. Most of it's rooms are singles/doubles but it also has a dorm. Also it's right in the centre of Melbourne.
Well, Melbourne is my home town, so i hope these suggestions help!
- Try and see the Great Ocean Road - I know there is a backpackers place in Torquay
- Get up to the Dandenongs for the day, and do some hiking
- Take a tour of the MCG
- Catch an AFL footy game - awesome atmosphere
- Check out the International Comedy Festival, on in venues around the city - should be still on when you arrive
There is a heap of things to do here - you will have such a great time. Have a look at http://www.visitvictoria.com.au/ for some more ideas!
Have a great time!
Yeah, you're here at a pretty good time with the Comedy Festival in full swing! It's quite the enjoyable event really.. even if you don't go to any shows (which you probably should), there is a lot more comedy on TV and radio while the Festival is on!
I'm slightly surprised the others didn't mention the Yarra Valley at all.. not necessarily easy to get to on public transport, but it can be a very nice day out and about. Totally agreed that you should try and find a way to get down to the Great Ocean Road - it's well worth the effort!!
The Visit Victoria site is good.. you may also want to check out
http://melbourne.citysearch.com.au which has a lot of event listings, etc..
