Ive heard that before you even step on a plane to Oz you will need AU$2000 in your bank account. Is there any truth in this ? and is there anything else you will need just to enter the country, ie other than the obvious, a passport ;)

cheers, Dave.

Yeah, I think this might be true.

hmmm.... is this because of a 'if things go tits up' situation you have some money to get back ?

Yeah I think that you have to be able to prove how you are going to support yourself while in the country. In other words, you have enough money to pay for food & accomodation travl etc.
I think it is mostly for people on holiday visas who are not allowed to work whilst in the country. Obvisouly if you don't have enough money to support yourself than they will think that you are going to work to make money & if you are not allowed to on your visa then they might not let you in the country without enough money.
I think it would only become a real issue if for whatever reason immigration think you are not genuinely entering the country just for tourism purposes.
I guess its also try and stop people who fly into the country with minimal money with the intention of staying illegally.
Although I must say I don't know the exact dollar amount.
Hope that makes sense and helps explain!!

Yeah I understand that, Its why I asked really do you reckon minumnm amount will go up with the period stayed, For example if I was going to 'holiday' for a month, would the minimum safety amount go up with that ?

It would be nice to find out the minimums but so far I cannot find anything about it

We came to Oz on a WHV 3 months ago and were told the same thing by our Visa company (that you need $5000 AUD in your account). Truth is you don't. When you get to customs the only things they check are your passport and your outward ticket. I've never heard of anyone actually being checked for funds. Maybe they only do it if you don't have an onward ticket outta there.

I think this only applies to working holiday visas doesn't it? I don't remember having to have any money in my account for a tourist visa.
