Hi Everyone,

We would like some advice on those who have experienced travel in the following Asian countries between JULY_AUGUST (monsoon i guess).

THailand
Nepal
India
Maldives
Sri lanka
Burma.

We are looking to go for a few months and backpacking through these countries but have read that the weather can be kind of brutal in places.

Any advice would be most appreciated about these areas in regards to all aspects of travel.

Look forward to your input.

thanks

Nick and Kel

I wouldn't worry too much about the "rainy season" in Thailand. It also rains a little in the "dry" season too! Normally it does not rain for more than a couple of hours. Often it is during the nighttime! The sun does shine enough for you to get a good tan or sunburn. If it rains take the time to catch a movie (current releases around $2.00,) wander through a mall, get something to eat in a restaurant, or catch some zzz's in your hotel.

When it rains there is some flooding where the drains can't keep up with the water coming down. After a while the flooding recedes, if you are worried about your room flooding out get a room on the second floor. It doesn't rain everywhere at the same time, Phuket could be wet and Chiangmai dry or vice-versa.

If it isn't the rain screwing up your trip it could be something else. If you travel for a long time something always comes up anyway. In Thailand from around May to October it is the low season, hotels have their lowest prices then. During low season you can also find air and hotel deals for Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur where $100 a night hotels are reduced quite a bi, sometime over 50% off (M-Th.)

Thanks AL.

It's a good point that we will be travelling a bit so we might get the rain someplaces and not much in others,

Have you been over to india/nepal or know about staying there?

Thanks for your post. !!!

I was in Nepal about 5 years ago. Pretty cheap, lots of cheap organized tours/treks. Had not booked a hotel before I reached the airport. Took a chance on one of the "hotel presenters" and booked a $10 per night hotel in Thamel. They gave me a free ride to the hotel. Hotel was okay, lots of backpackers in the neighborhood, Freak Street nearby. Cheap eats in the local restaurants. Got the visa approval at the airport, about 2 hour wait!

Name of the Hotel was:

KHANGSAR GUEST HOUSE (P) LTD.
Thamel, Chhetrapati, Thamel, Kathmandu. (No e-mail address on my old card.)

India is in the future. I did visit Sri Lanka a long time ago, it's like India "lite!" No prior visa requirement for Sri Lanka for short stays. When I get to Bangkok the Indian Embassy used to fart around too long for me to get my visa. I usually go to Asia and then take a second trip to another country, within that time frame. India is still on the plate - but in the future! (Along with Mongolia and Poland and about 50 more places.)

Without worry you can tarvel in INDIA during July-Aug. While most states of India will have rainy season, Tamilnadu state will not have rainy season until Mid Oct.

Suggest you to arrive in Chennai(Madras)city and go round other cities such as Pondicherry, Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Madurai.By the time you enter Kerala state, peak rainy season would have gone (mid/last week May and June are the peak rainy seasons in Kerala).Youc an also tour Karnatak state example mysore city.

Suggest you at first finish Thailand, Burma,Nepal,India,SriLanka and Male in that order.
If you need more information about India, let me know.
