Ok...whats the crack everyone! 6 of us are going to oz in september of next year and we are flyin into perth...going to spend a few weeks there (how ever long it takes to get sick off!) then we are going to venture on to darwin and stay there for a week or two then straight down to adelaide. Then we will be going onto Melbourne,Sydney...etc,etc!!!

My question would be is that when we are leaving perth what would the best mode of transport be? and of course, it would have to be a cheap mode aswell as we will have a limited drinking fund and wouldnt want to be eating into that!!! sound

hi, i travelled between darwin, alice springs, adelaide, melbourne and perth by train. I got a 6 month train pass which cost $450(with backpacker card) and it is unlimited use within the 6 months.
It takes 2 days to travel from adelaide to perth, so it isnt the best way if u aint got much time, and it does get a bit boring if ur on ur own, but its certainly cheap, and should be a laugh if there r 6 of u travelling 2gether! there are lounge and diner cars, so u can get up and walk about the train, which is good cos staying in ur seat for 24/48 hours is not a lot of fun...unless ur really into reading!
other travel options r busing it...but its still the same time(im assuming) and u cant get up and move around, driving...but i got lifts from ppl and didnt have too much luck with cars/vans etc(goin up the west coast)....4 out of 4 broke down....2 seriously enough to have to dump them and find other transport, and alos if there is 6 of u, it aint gonna be that easy to find a 6 seater vehicle.
hope this is of sum help...

the only prob with trains is that they dont go from perth to darwin. hava look at www.trainways.com.au for routes, timetables and prices etc

i bused it up the east coast, they get a bit annoying, stopping at every random little place no-one has ever heard of. Not sure how many buses go up the west coast and thru the middle? Its not as touristy on the west. i dont really have an answer, sorry
