My family and myself are looking into buliding a backpackers/travellers accommodation/resort somehwere either just south or north of Byron Bay - looking at perhaps the Brunswick Heads or Ballina.
We'd like to get some ideas from those who have travelled to the area, and what they think backpackers/travellers would really benefit from, in terms of locations that don't have enough cheap accommodation, or the type of services they should offer ie. cheap cooking, surfing lessons, yoga, scooter hire.
ANY IDEAS WELCOME

I think its important that you have a decent communal area where people can feel comfortable and relaxed for those times when youre exhausted and just want to chill out.....I hate those places where you walk into the communal area and sometimes you feel totally ostracised...Kinda like when you walk into a pub or bar that only likes locals and you feel really unwelcome!!!A TV with a few DVDS maybe, an extra few seats with a few books or newspapers maybe, put internet in there and maybe have a shared kitchen joined onto there just so its got a casual atmosphere with a lot of different things going on in there?
I love these places where they hold like a weekly party like a BBQ or picnic, its great to all get together and meet new people and have a laugh!
Maybe you could hold a couple of day trips...invest in a truck and hold cheap tours for people who are maybe only in a place for a couple of days so it gives them a chance so see the highlights of the place?

Communal area is important as is a free breakfast! Costs next to nothing to stick a couple of loaves of bread out, butter and jam, some cereal, tea and coffee and you're already providing that little bit extra to entice them! I think it also helps create an nice buzzy atmosphere in the mornings

A few games would be nice perhaps, to get people interacting not than just watching TV.

I haven't been to Ballina in years, but it wasn't much chop last time I went there.

What about somewhere inland; Bangalow as an example?

just one more quick idea....if it was finacially possible you could throw in a washing machine!!!I love hostels you stay at where they have somewhere you can do your own washing maching without having to hang around in a laundrette or send you things out to be cleaned....its great to just be able to throw everything in and not worry about it vanishing!!
