Guess I should have done this before to introduce myself, but I've been having too much fun posting in the other forums. I'm a native New Yorker who's lived in Switzerland, the Caribbean (St. Kitts, Antigua, Grand Cayman), as well as in other parts of the states. I'm a veterinarian and writer (mostly sports - baseball) by trade.
Traveling has been in my blood since I was a teenager and I've been to over 60 countries so far as well as traveling extensively in the states. I'm about to embark on another major journey of 1-3 years (leaving Feb 12,2006) to circle the globe (If you really want to know about it you can check the website) and writing a travel book, using all of my passions (medicine, writing and travel) to create something quite different than what I've seen out there.
I'm not really as much of a backpacker as I used to be and now that I'm married and traveling with my wife I tend to hotel more often than hostel (unless the hostel has private rooms for us) and budget a little more per day than I used to.
My favorite places have are rather varied, Alaska, Vietnam, the Galapagos, Belgium and Luxembourg.
As far as hobbies go I'm a big boats guy (rebuilding wooden boats), fisherman, scuba diver, photographer and a foodie.
Taking this trip and quitting our regular jobs to travel and write is a huge thing at this point in our lives. Exciting, scary, and promising to be a huge amount of fun.
and I wouldn't want it any other way.
All the best,
Welcome to Travellerspoint! (Better late than never )
I've seen many of your posts...informative and very helpful!
Sounds like a great idea for a book..and your right..never seen anything remotely like that.
I wish you and your wife an awesome journey! You have to keep us updated (a few of us travel through others) with pictures!
Happy Trails to you both!
DocNy - It seems like you have had an interesting life already.. Too many people are "gunna's" they have dreams but don't even attempt to realise them.
This trip is the next stage of your lives - a dream and an adventure I say to you both... 'good on you and go for it'.
Wow - just took a look at your site. Welcome to TP and happy travels! Um... do you have room in your bags? Some enquiring minds want to know..
Thanks to all of you. I love to interact with people of a simillar mindset so this place really is great. I'll do my best to share my research and my experience with those who wish to know.
You can never have too much knowledge about travel, people or places. I'll keep on plugging along and traveling the world pretty much forever. Now if I can figure out how to add Antarctica into this trip I'll be a very happy camper (only slightly figuratively - though my tent is only three seasons!).
Thanks again for the warm welcome, and if anyone ever wants to tap my knowledge of NYC all they have to do is ask.
Wow!welcome to TP!!!!I think its really cool doing what your doing!!!a job is just a job and you only live once!I hope you have a fabulous time!!!
Sounds amazing. Something to aspire to certainly.
ps I love New York - but then who doesn't?
Indeed, sounds amazing..
where is home for you I wonder, because you have been traveling for so long and even in your youth?
Well my heart calls New York City home and probably always will, even if I live in another part of the world at some point further down the line. Sometimes though you just need to take a little wander to remind you that your hometown, or country isn't the whole world and to learn about another place, culture and to open your eyes and see the world community - something that I wish a lot more of my countrymen would see. It would probably better our nation's understanding of a lot of things.
Loved the introduction - 2 of your favourite places in the world are on my places to visit before l died - Alaska & Vietnam!
