Hey all! I'm from Guam and i'll be traveling to Australia in the beginning of March. I'm on a fairly limited budget, so i want to spend as little money on hotels as possible. i was wondering if anyone was familiar with Gilligans Backpackers in Cairns? Is it a nice place and is it close to the heart of Cairns? Or, if anyone has any other suggestions i would be more than willing to listen. thank you!!
I actually stayed at calypso,(a 15-20min walk from G's) but knew people that were at G's they said it was great, it kinda looks like a huge hotel! I went down in the evening to check out what was going on there, they've got a big bar there and it was packed. We then headed off to a local club, really cant remember how far it was-but we walked it and i dont think it was too far.
I had a friend stayin in Gilligans, when i was in Cairns last year. It is right in the middle of Cairns. It is a fairly new hostel with all the amenities, it is quite expensive bcos of that tho. It depends what you look for in a hostel, i tend to go for cheaper hostels without as many things that although are very nice to have in a hostel, u pay for them in the price. There r quite a few hostels in Cairns, i stayed in 3 of them, and 2 of them were really not that good, i found global palace to be a nice place. that is in the centre of cairns, but was cheaper than gilligans.
Gilligans is VERY expensive. It has bras and a club which look ok but unless you have a lot of money. There is tons of accomodation in Cairns. All I will say, is don't stay in Leos, its very cheap but a dirty cockroach ridden dump where the bathrooms flood.
Oh the good times.
it sounded better when it was full of bras! *wink*
Checked out gilligans when we were in cairns, it looked nice place, but was the most expensive hostel i'd seen on my travels. But in fairness it looked more like a hotel. We stayed in dreamtime which was really nice and friendly. Would definately recommend it.
try the BEllview backpackers, it's cheap, clean right in the centre of Cairns on the esplanade and there's a nice pool to swim in!They also give very good advice on diving packages and tours!
