Buying an RV/Camper

Travel Forums North America Buying an RV/Camper

Hi,

We're planning a 3 month trip around America - the rough plan at the moment is to fly into NY mid August (coming from UK), drive across to San Francisco, go to the Burning Man festival in September, then down the west coast & around, into Mexico then out again to either Miami or NY to fly back out. We haven't sorted the route so much yet but we want to buy a camper van while we're out there & then sell it again at the end of our trip, and was wondering if anyone could give us any advice? How much could we pick up one for? We don't want anything too flash or big (the smaller the better I would reckon - there's only 2 of us), just something that will take us the distance. Where would be the best place to buy a camper & how would we go about it? How easy would it be to re-sell? Would not being US residents cause any problems, with insurance for example? How far do you reckon we could get in 3 months - is our route too long? Can you just pull up anywhere on the way, or would we need to book into campsites every night? Is there any issue with crossing into Mexico & out again?... etc etc... !!!

Any advice would be really appreciated!!

Jane

I did 2/3 that distance in Canada in about 41 days if that helps. But it depends on how much you want to see and how many stops you make. I did a quick estimate of a similar trip for myself and it came out to three months. But, your travel style will be different than mine I suspect.

How much could we pick up one for? We don't want anything too flash or big (the smaller the better I would reckon - there's only 2 of us), just something that will take us the distance.

I would suggest an internet search for prices. I'm sure there's somebody willing to take it off your hands at the end if you're willing to sell for less than what it's worth. The other suggestion I have is to rent instead of buying. Again I would suggest an internet search for rental companies. Also look into camper vans or type C RV's instead of full sized models since you are looking for something simple.

Again renting instead of buying will help with insurance issues since the rental company will most likely help with that. Yes and no interms of "pulling up anywhere". Observe "no camping" and "private" signs of course, and you probably would want to stay away from dodgy back alleys. But I've seen a lot of campers put up for the night in truck stops, gas stations, and scenic rest stops and picnic areas in rural areas. Most campers will allow you to store water and waste for a few days, and power will come from the alternator and battery packs. But every few days I suspect you'll want to stop at a gas station equiped for RV's or a RV site to dispose of waste and fill up your water tanks.
