Not really such a dumb question though is it. We booked a holiday recently and decided to check in online. It said we needed to complete API for each passenger. It asks on the form for the passport number for each of us and that's what I put in. ie the number from the passport where it says passport number. Guess what, after completing the information for all four of us and clicking continue it then tells me that the passport numbers entered are not long enough and sends me back to an empty form to try again. After several attempts and getting the same result I did a search on the airline web site and then on the internet - and nowhere (including this site) has any information other than saying "It's on the passport, where it says Passport Number". No help then from anywhere and especially from here where you would expect help and not sarcasm. Eventually I entered 28 digits from the bottom that includes GBR and a letter F or M presumably Male or Female. This seems to have been accepted and I can only assume I've entered the correct information as there is absolutely nowhere where it tells you. The only thing it asks for is Passport Number. Maybe this will help someone, as it seems no one else wants to even try - not even the government website. Suppose I should have 'phoned someone up but I'm a bit of a stubborn old cuss.
