I was going to get my Thai visa tomorrow for my trip in Mar-Apr (i will be there for 5 weeks) but I was informed today by a friend that you can get them in the airport in Bangkok for a little cheaper, but, he is a bit of a nutcase and I just wanted to make sure that you really can and also that it is all above board! The last thing I want to end up doing is spending my time in a Thai prision! Any help would be greatly apreciated!

If I were you I would just get it before you go....Its cheap enough anyway and it saves the hassel and the waiting and trying to explain yourself when you arrive there!!!!My friend had an ordeal trying to explain why he didnt have one when in fact he didnt actually need one and whilst I got through the whole imigration thing really quick!Id say best to have it all prepared!

You get a free 30 day visa on arrival. You can get a 10 day extension for 1900 baht. This maybe easier and cheaper than getting a visa in your home country. Or you could stay a couple of weeks in Thailand with the free 30 day visa and then go to Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia for a few days and then come back in for another free 30 days. Decide what you want to see and then decide if paying for a visa beyond 30 days is worth it.

bear in mind that you need to be able to prove that you have an onward ticket from Thailand...I was spending 6 weeks travelling through Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.Id estimated that I would be in Thailand less that 30 days but as I was flying out of singapore I had no evidence that I wasnt going to outstay my visa...So I had quite a few problems with this and the thai embassy said I would only be able to enter the country with a visa. They said to me that the visa on arrival is given to people only with a proven departure date.hope this helps!

You can get a visa on arrival. The visa fee is 1000bhat($1=39bhat approx.)You need to fillup an application form and affix a passport size photo. Also you need to show your return ticket.I think it is easy to show your onward journey ticket( or the return ticket to your country). This is hassel free procedure. You get a 30day visa in about 15mnts max.If there is no crowd, much quicker that 15mnts!!!No questions are asked.
I never came across such a country that gives visa so easily and so quickly.

Khun Vegas is right on!

Many times I come to Thailand and get the free 30 day visa, within that time frame I go to another country and on my return get another 30 days free.

I guess it depends where you plan on getting the flight back home from?

If you're planning to be in Thailand for over 30 days then I'd get the Tourist visa if I was you.

The tourist visa costs £25 but if you buy a visa at customs it costs 1000 Baht in any case (approx £14), so imo it's worth paying a few extra pounds for the convenience of not having to make a trip to the border and back.

If you have any further queries though it might be worth e-mailing the Thai Consulate at enquiries@thaiconsul-uk.com. I e-mailed them yesterday with a couple of queries and they had e-mailed me back within a couple of hours, which was totally impressive promptness.
