My name is Hannah and i am setting off to travel to India, then Thailand, Cambodia, Laos , indonesia (and really i want to get as far as possible overland before flying to Australia.
Firstly, do i need different types of Malaria tablets for each country? Which ones are the best? as i've heard that some can make you really sick?!
Also does anyone know if it is possible to go overland as far as say; East Timor?
Welcome to Travellerspoint! Sounds like an awesome trip that you have planned...I hope you have an excellent time! Keep us posted on your journey!
I can't be of much help to you with your question..If you post it in the "General Talk Forum" I am sure the many knowledgeable and friendly folks here will be happy to help. And if you do a searh, it will bring up many threads that have already discussed it.
Much luck to you and have a wonderful time!!
I give you the benefit of my experience when I was in East Timor for an assignment...
Tuberculosis is still the main cause of death. Malaria, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, diarrhoea, pneumonia, and skin infections are some of the other common pathologieproblems. Chikungunya (Swahili for "contorts" or "bends up") is another viral infection transmitted by mosquitos.
Malaria is chloroquine resistant so take doxycycline or mefloquine. Remember sunscreen ( well, you would want to miss out on the beaches, right?), especially if you are taking doxycycline for malaria to minimise photosensitivity
As for getting to Dili (capital), you can start in bangkok, overland through Malaysia then onto Singapore, and from here fly Bali onward to Dili unless from Bali you want to do island hopping onwards -braving boat rides, ferries, rough seas, etc through sulawesi, etc! Not advisable!Never!!Unsafe, etc!!!!
Thanks for your wise words!!
One question, can i go overland from Singapore to Bali? or do i have to fly?
Overland to Bali from Singapore?...No way!..You have to fly to Denpasar!and if you want to give Singapore a skip, u can fly from Kuala Lumpur...and if you want to see sarawak and sabah (longhouses, native culture, etc), fly into Kuching, make your way to Kota kinabalu, and then from KK you can fly to Denpasar...low budget carrier, see airasia...
Hey...sabah , esp in the sandakan area is worth it....orang utan, the crocker range, and the padas river rafting, rapid shooting, klias wetlands (proboscis monkeys), climb up gunung kinabalu to catch wonderful sunrise...hmmmmm....so much there!
