Hi,

My b/f and I are thinking of going to Oz and New Zealand for 2 months (1 in Oz and 1 in NZ)in November this yr.

Basically we want to travel down the east coast of Oz from cairns to sydney by hiring a campervan - is one month a long enough time to do this in? Also, is November time ish a good time to go weatherwise? Dont really know much about NZ but want to do the North and South again prob in a campervan.

Any recommendations of places to visit or suggestions on how to get the most out of our trip would be fantastic!

Thanks a lot!!

Mel

Hello Mel,
Close call, but one month is just about long enough. You will probably spend a week or so (in total) purely driving - the distances are not to be underestimated. A campervan is ideal because it means you don't spend any time looking for accommodation, you just turn up and head out to see the sights.
Lonely Planet do a book dedicated to this east coast route - highly recommended.

November is a great time - beginning of summer, and avoids the peak periods of Dec and Jan.

NZ is best seen by motorhome too, but again you'll need time - not so much for the distances, but for the sheer number of things to see and the fact that they are dotted around everywhere.
North and South islands are both great, but fairly different. If pushed, I'd spend most time in the south, but the north has more of a Maori influence, which is worth seeing.

Just to give you an idea of time to travel in Australia. If you want to travel from Brisbane to Melbourne, it will take a good 18-22 hours straight. It takes about 9-10 hours straight travel from Sydney to Melbourne. (this includes no breaks). So yeah you'll spend a lot of time in the car driving :) Make sure you get a campervan with a CD!!!

hey!

I think that your timing i awesum! There' no better time than the start of November.. because you get some hot days but they're not TOO hot. So GO THEN!!

As for your time frame. Pretty good! You'll be able to stay at some of the places that you want to and then pass on through the others that arent so crash hot. Basically keep in mind how long you are staying in places.. it catches up with you!
the coast is the best in the world.. Make sure you allow a fair bit of time for the queensland part. the great barrier reef is so good and you should spend a few days relaxing there and soaking it all up.

good luck!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies and advice - it is real helpful - I will definately by the Lonely Planet book. I really appreciate the advice on the amount of time we would actually be on the road as I had no idea about how long it would take to do those distances - we are still determined though! In terms of hiring a campervan - wev'e been lookin on the net and have seen sites that advertise campervan relocations where they need to get a campervan from cairns to sydney for example and the rates seem to be cheaper that other hire companies - does anyone know much about these/have ever used this method of hiring a campervan?

Thanks a lot!

Mel
