Can someone please tell me what Cancun is like???? I recently saw the documentary called 'The Real Cancun' and I was so intrigued by the look of the place. If I was to go..... when should I go and how long should I stay for and where is the best place to stay????

As usual, depends on what you are into. Id say go to Isla Mujeres and Tulum, maybe take a peek into Play Carmen and the boat to Cozumel, then go back where you liked it. Cancun, the city, is not a bad place to live, especially in the cheaper hotels down around Market 23 and 28. The hotel strip is my idea of hell, many people's idea of MTV wildon heaven.

Cancun... is a MEGA resort. This time of year it is one if not THE spring break capital for east coast college kids.. There are literally two Cancuns. One is the hotel zone, where it is a strip of white pristine beaches with the turquoise water, hotel upon hotel, each one more glamorous than the next, every major chain in the world is there. Literally if you have been to any east coast resort ( Miami, Jersey shore, Maryland, NC etcwhere hotels are one next to the other, this is what the hotel area of Cancun is.) shopping malls with all the major stores simimlar to the states , restaurants, and night life. THis is all the hotel zone of Cancun. Many of the major fast food chains are scattered about the area as well. Downtown Cancun Ave Tulum is the original tourist area of Cancun, opening back in 75 with the start constructing of Cancun hotel zone. Here you will find some hotels, some shops, the traditional market as well as the arts and crafts markets, some restaurants, but it is mostly the commercial and business center for Cancun residence. The city hall is there, telefone company, banks etc.
The surrounding areas of Cancun in the state of Q. Roo such as Isla Mujers, Puerto Morels, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, Isla Holbox, Cozumel as well as the southern part of the state, Laguna Bacalar and Majahual offer options that are not as "lively" and wild that Cancun can be. Good luck and enjoy your adventure. For places to stay where and when to go would all depend on what you want to do once here and your budget. Lonely planet has a good new book about the area with the latest updated details. Yucatan edition.
