Hello all! I'm off to Japan for 10 days at the start of July and am stuck on ideas as to what to do (on a budget!). Aside from the obvious things, like Tokyo and Mt Fuji etc, can anyone suggest what we feasibly can do? Thanks!!

You can go some place cool and try an "onsen" (hot spring bath). The one I tried was in Nikko, but there are many in Japan.

I agree with Zags, Onsen is definitely not to be missed. There are also Sentos (neighborhood public bathhouses) everywhere so if you can't make it to Onsen, try that.

I would also recommend going to Osaka for great food, Nara and Kyoto for its temples and great people, Hiroshima ... The list is long so let me know if you want more specifics!

Have fun, Helene

in 10days you can see a lot. Start with Sapporo in the north of Japan. Really a nice tourist place to visit.
Don't miss visiting Osaka, Kyoto, Nara where you can see traditional Japanese culture and a bit of past history. You can see some beautiful castles and temples in these places. Both Kyoto and Nara are near to Osaka. Ofcourse visit to Mt.Fuji and Nikko can also be added in your list.
If you are gong to travel a lot by train, i think it is better to take railpass like euro-rail pass.
Never take a taxi unless in urgency as taxis are too expensive.
Japan has a good network of efficient rail system.

You can keep visiting Tokyo in the last since you might arrive/depart from there. In Tokyo, you can visit areas like Akihabara(for electronics), Shinjuku, Ginza, etc.. You can visit disneyland and Tokyo tower too.

Have a nice stay in Japan.

Trains and buses in Japan is a must for those who are on a budget. If you have not left for Japan. Check on line to get your railway pass. You can get multi-day passes cheaper than buying in Japan.Go to Yahoo search looking for Japan travel bureau, railway passes, ect... This will save you lots of travel money.

Few sites I would recommend: climb Mt. Fuji, one day visit to Nikko, visit castle in Kyoto, temples in Nara. If you still have time then go to Hiroshima. In Tokyo, visit Akihabara electronic district, Tokyo fish market (have to get up early for this), get to Tokyo tower. I also suggest that you go Barnes and Noble read some books on Tokyo travel, before you go.
