I spent 6 months living in NZ (almost 5 years ago) and am planning my first trip back down under towards the end of 2006.
I'm pretty happy I know where I want to go back to in NZ, but OZ is another matter...
I've only been to the Gold Coast (I went on a holiday with the family I stayed with!) and Sydney so I'm looking for some advice on where else to head to. I'm planning on seeing Sydney again and, embarrassingly enough, a trip to the Neighbours bar in Melbourne is a must! What else do you guys recommend? I'm looking to spend about a month there.
Also...I'd like to squeeze a trip to one/some of the pacific island in while I'm there. Does anyone have any specific recommendations?
Cheers guys...looking forward to the replies
Ok, having bought myself a guidebook and done a little more research I've got a slightly better idea of where I want to go. My (very rough) idea is this:
Fly to melbourne, travel up the east coast via Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Hervey Bay (trip to Fraser island from here) then continue up North with the intention of a barrier reef boat trip at some point, eventually fly out from Cairns. Can anyone help me fill in the gaps/point out some must-see places? I've also heard the whitsundays aren't worth bothering with - fact or fiction?
I by no means declare myself an expert but I spent 6 weeks in Oz this time last year, and I would definately do whitsundays I missed out going but buddies of mine went and had a blast, as for cains snorkling is the best way to go i thought the scuba diving was alright but rather saved the money and just snorkled instead on the GB reef, definately go to manly beach in sydney, in melbourne check out the beer gardens, brisbane is a short train ride to surfer paradise I suggest you try and spend some beach time there along with the crocidile hunters zoo. thats my 2 cents
