I am heading to Melbourne soon from New Zealand. I am hoping to get some work in a hostel cleaning to cut my costs while i'm there. Has anyone worked in any hostels in Melbourne or have any recommendations of ones they've stayed at before i start ringing around? Is St. Kilda or the city better to live in?
Haven't stayed at any, but I have heard enough recommendations for the Greenhouse on Flinders Lane to be able to recommend it. It is in an absolutely superb location and as seems pretty friendly as well. It would be my pick if I were visiting Melbourne.
all natioins on spencer street i stayed and worked their for 6 months you'll love it
I recently stayed at Coffee Palace in St. Kilda and loved every minute of it. There have been a lot of bad reviews of the place, but I found it to be charming, and the staff there to be fantastic. I am not sure about the working part, but they do have a job bank there.
Cheers for that guys much appreciated
to begin with i strongly advise setting up camp in st kilda, this area is predominantly travellers and young professionals. As you'll probably know there is a superb tram system in melbourne which can be used for free (well u just jump off whenever you see a inspector) so travel into the city can be cheap and also takes around twenty mins to get there.
Ritz for backpackers is a good suggestion, the staff are friendly and its a good place to party! also if u have much travel experience i would also suggest base backpackers on Ackland street you may be able to get a reception job.
enjoy the buzz, the best city in Australia!!!!

That would be very bad form. Stealing is never warranted and certainly locals do not appreciate arrogant travellers abusing our transport system like that. If you want to save on transport, try walking
