I'm going to be visiting Luang Prabang for 4 days in May and was wondering if you could give me some advice on how much I should expect to pay for food/tours? I'm interested in river cruises and elephant treks.
I've booked my accomodation already. Tours advertised online seem quite overpriced. Can anyone recommend an agency I can book with, or i it's better to wait until I arrive.
by may, the peak season should be tapering off...so why not wait until you are in LP to get that elephant ride and river cruise...will be a lot more cheaper... "again, the nearest place where you can get the elephant ride is Hongsa...you can combine this and the river cruise (that's what you want, right?)..if you opt for this arrangement:
from LP, take a speed boat/slow boat along mekong river to Ban Thaxouang...you will stop along the way at the Park Ou Cave (the cave of 1,000 gold lacquered Buddha statues)....and from Ban Thaxouang, you travel by road to Hong Sa. This means overnight here.
Next day, you take elephant ride through the jungle to the Lu hill tribe village. you then return to hongsa ( of course, you can arrange to stay with family in Lu village!)for a night
The following day, you journey by road to Ban Thaxouang , and then boat back to Luang Prabang, stopping along the way at Ban Xang Hai (lao lao village!).
if you are adventurous, you can do this on your own (with some friends), otherwise, there are many tour operators opposite the jetty...compare prices...
so that covers 3Dx2N....
you can get decent food for USD3-4...
Thanks for the advice, very much appreciated!
