For a start check out some of the web pages for U.S. airlines servicing the UK. Airlines such as NWA, Delta, US Air, AA, Continental, and United are some of them. Sometimes they run specials or discount some routes. This will also give you a BASE price that you can use to compare the discounters and bucket shops against. Otherwise how would you know you got a good deal without knowing the cheapest price you could get dealing directly with the airline company?

Sign up for the frequent flyer program. With many airlines only 25000 miles (silver card or equivalent) give you special advantages like first on, free upgrades, preferential seating, and a heavier weight allowance. Getting onto the plane in one of the first groups means all of the overhead bins are still empty, you can store your bag near your seat. So paying a few pounds more for a particular flight may be small compared to the benefits you get later on your next trip.

Don't be fixed on one particular departure date, check a few days before and after your preferred departue date for a lower price. Sometimes flights starting or ending on Fridays, holidays, and weekends may be more expensive - check a few days before and after for best results.

hey jenjen, I'm not sure how cheap is cheap, but the best site for finding flights is

I spent a few minutes looking around and theres flights going from dusseldorf in germany to miami for about 200 euros which is 150 pounds. And Ryanair goes from London to dussedorff for 0.01 pounds so you may want to check that out. I'm not sure how much the big airlines are but I would be surprised if you could find anything under 200 pounds.

Either way check out that site and look for other ways to get across the pond cheap and I'm sure you'll find something good. Also, zoom airlines goes from the UK to Canada for like 100 pounds.

Good luck!
