Well, me and a bunch of friends are planning a road trip soon. We'll be 18 when we do it and we find it a little difficult to get cars etc. What is the cheapest way to get a car for 2 months and got any routes in mind? We do, but what do you suggest? Oh, and how much will it cost per person and for the car rental (2 months), motels, food, clothes and fun!
You are unlikely to be able to hire a car until you are 21 years old from most of the car hire companies in most states and even then you will pay a hefty premium on the insurance until you are 25. I would look into other ways of getting transport e.g train, bus or maybe even buying a car.
Try going to a rental website and looking at the age resrictions. Hertz or budget, etc. I know most states you rent in will charge you an extra $25-$40/day if the rentee is under 25! Check out greyhound and amtrak routes for other options.
Don't know much about the lodging - maybe you can camp?
If you are extremely lucky, you might be able to rent a car if you're only 18. I have heard of places that do it. As far as your route...where are you from? I'd suggest making a loop and not retracing your steps. I've got some friends who drove from Kentucky out to Cali and they camped for much of it at state and national parks...really made things cheaper. If you're going in the summer, I think this would be the way to go. Good luck, keep us updated!
